Defensive Driving : How to avoid collision

An extremely frequent and costly accident, in terms of liability, is the COLLISION WITH THE FRONT VEHICLE.

There are 4 simple steps that will help you avoid being involved in a collision with the vehicle ahead.

Step 1. Watch for signs from driver ahead as to what he intends to do. Did he switch on his turning signal? Did his brake lights lit? Is he slowly shifting to the right or left as if to prepare for a turn?

Step 2. See as far as possible. See beyond the driver ahead and look out for situations that may cause him to react and which may become a threat to you. Are there any vehicles stopping on the side of the road or road shoulder? Are there any pedestrians trying to dash across the road

Step 3. Keep a safe following distance. Allow one car length for every 16km/h of speed. Keep even further when driving in adverse weather condition. One easier method of using the 2 sec rule is to make sure that you have the correct following distance. If you stay 2 sec behind the front car, you will have the correct distance no matter what your speed is

Step 4. Always prepare to stop. Slow down and touch your brakes as soon as you see a hazard that may need you to stop or take time to react. Failure to do this is known as “delayed braking”, a serious flaw in defensive driving technique. The time it takes you to stop depends upon your speed, condition of the road, the condition of your vehicle and how alert you have been.

To expressed in a fomula :
Stopping Distance = Reaction Distance + Braking Distance

By always bearing in mind and practice the above 4 steps, you will reduce your chance of have a collision with front vehicle.
